Gymnasium # 157 named after Princess Eugenia of Oldenburg

SPIMUN is traditionally hosted by Gymnasium 157, one of the oldest educational institutions of Saint-Petersburg. The history of the Gymnasium dates back to 1868 when it was founded as the gymnasium for girls. It bears the name of its patroness Princess of Oldenburg, Granddaughter of the Russian Emperor Nicolas I. Princess Eugenia was not only the guardian of the school, she also took an active part in its everyday life and helped to develop school curriculum in several subjects.

The history of the Gymnasium is closely connected with a heroic history of St. Petersburg. During the 900-day siege of Leningrad (1941 – 1944) teachers and students of the school took an active part in defence of the city, patrolled streets of the district and extinguished fires. In 1943 39 teachers and 49 students were awarded with medals for heroism during difficult siege days.

The school museum provides a great opportunity for learning school history and offers guiding tours in Russian and English. The museum was opened in May 1996 and now it contains more than 500 exhibits: documents, objects of everyday life and photos.

The staff of the school numbers 54 teachers. About 600 students (7 - 17 years old) study in the Gymnasium. Special attention is given to the humanitarian subjects such as history, literature and foreign languages.
